Summary of Duties:

The City of London is committed to eradicating gender-based violence in our community and to creating a Safe London for women, girls, and gender-diverse and trans people. The Senior Coordinator plays a supportive role in becoming the safe and inclusive workplace we envision, and also collaborates with community partners to drive broader social change.

The City of London joined the UN Safe Cities initiative to address gender-based violence in public spaces; City Council initially introduced Safe London as a strategic priority in 2019.

Reporting to the Director, Anti-Racism, Anti-Oppression, the Senior Coordinator, Safe Cities Equity and Inclusion supports the work of the Director, Manager and Advisors in the Anti-Racism and Anti-Oppression Division to develop effective relationships, recommend and implement innovative community engagement strategies with individuals or groups who experience marginalization, oppression and/or racism, including Black and Indigenous people, other racialized peoples, persons with disabilities, members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ communities, and women.  The Senior Coordinator, Safe Cities and Equity and Inclusion will support the Safe London strategic priority both internally within the corporation and the community.  The Senior Coordinator will also participate in national, and international groups related to gender equity and gender-based sexual violence, including the London Coordinating Committee to End Woman Abuse and the United Nations Safe Cities Initiative.  The Senior Coordinator will also administer and support projects, strategies and initiatives of the Anti-Racism and Anti-Oppression Division and promotes linkages between the Division/Corporation and the community, including key partners, agencies, boards and commissions. 
 

Work Performed:

  • Act as a key coordinator and support for the City of London’s participation in the UN Safe Cities Initiative. Help facilitate training, awareness initiatives and internal/external coordination of the Safe Cities project.
  • Act as a resource and connection for community partners on the Safe Cities project and key facilitator of meetings and training related to making the City of London’s Safe Cities initiative, that involve confidential and sensitive conversations related to women and gender-based issues. 
  • Work to build trust and strengthen the City's relationship with peoples and communities that experience marginalization, oppression, racism or other barriers to services, and the agencies that provide supports to those individuals and communities, in order to connect individuals and groups to enhanced opportunities for meaningful civic engagement. 
  • Administer and support the projects, strategies and initiatives of the Anti-Racism and Anti-Oppression Division.  Organize meetings, maintain and update work plan, agendas and minutes, and complete related activities.  Prepare related reports for approval by the Director, Anti-Racism and Anti-Oppression with distribution to City Council.
  • Provide advice to project working groups to help shape the work being done to identify and dismantle systemic racism and oppression within the City of London. 
  • Facilitate and participate in events and activities including town hall meetings, symposia, training and information sessions, with organizations, service providers, community agencies, City Council, City staff, and other community groups.   
  • Organize and facilitate community meetings to provide information to the community regarding community-led strategies to disrupt and dismantle racism and oppression in the community.

  • Support the research, creation, socialization and ongoing evaluation of an Anti-Racism and Anti-Oppression framework to support staff in implementing and embedding values of equity and inclusion in their work.
  • Support community events, developing and implementing plans, preparing related materials, and communicating with participants.
  • Support relationship building and cooperation between the City of London and organizations, agencies and other key partners. 
  • Support the Anti-Racism and Anti-Oppression Division in the implementation of strategic plans and initiatives.
  • Partner with the Strategic Communications Division and the Strategy and Innovation Division in the development of communication plans, key messages, and significant dates.  Update the Anti-Racism and Anti-Oppression pages on the City website and the intranet.  
  • Demonstrate commitment to anti-racism, anti-oppression, and human rights through practices and interactions with key partners, employees and individuals and support programs and initiatives that reflect this commitment. 
  • Demonstrate commitment and adherence to Health and Safety legislation and programs; actively promote a culture of safety.
  • Engage in opportunities to work across Divisions and Service Areas in support of enterprise-wide collaboration.
  • Support the development of processes and tools needed to increase efficiencies and improve the effectiveness of services provided by the Division.
  • Lead research or special projects as required for the Anti-Racism and Anti-Oppression Division as directed by the Director, Anti-Racism, Anti-Oppression. 
  • Contribute to the application of an anti-racism and anti-oppression framework for all communications, programs and services. 
  • Prepare reports for the Director on the work of special projects assigned.

Qualifications:

  • University degree in a relevant area of study or equivalent combination of education and related professional and lived community experience.
  • Lived experience with or work experience to address sexism, transphobia or homophobia and the ability to acknowledge and speak to the social, political, cultural, spiritual, health and economic history, challenges, and opportunities, and the impact of systemic racism and oppression, relevant to Black and Indigenous people, and other racialized people, persons with disabilities, members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ communities, immigrants or newcomers and women, is an asset.
  • Experience in organizing and facilitating community engagement initiatives and programs involving individuals and organizations in the public, private, or not for profit sector, including group process and meeting facilitation experience.
  • Demonstrated experience working with key partners such as persons with disabilities, Indigenous, Black and other racialized groups, the not-for-profit sector, social organizations, community groups, businesses, education, health care, and other key partners.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of various related legislation including the Ontario Human Rights Code, Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, the Ontario Health and Safety Act, and the Employment Standards Act is an asset.
     

Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to engage with and facilitate meaningful, trust-based relationships with diverse populations. 
  • Demonstrated understanding of the intersectionality of various forms of power, privilege and oppression in organizations and society is a requirement. 
  • Demonstrated understanding of cultural values and norms of various communities, particularly Black and Indigenous communities and people, women, 2SLGBTQIA+, immigrant or newcomers and marginalized religious communities.  
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the various social and economic issues that impact the lived experience of citizens.  
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal and customer services skills, including conflict resolution and problem solving.
  • Demonstrated ability to be an effective team member and contribute to programs and services provided by the team.
  • Highly effective verbal and written communication skills, with emphasis on presenting findings, preparing briefing material, and providing recommendations.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with diverse populations within the community; experience working collaboratively with organizations, clients, and other stake holders.
  • Ability to provide a high level of attention to detail, make sense of data and solve problems. 
  • Ability to understand the importance of service delivery; contribute to the implementation of initiatives that support key partners and the public in a timely and effective way.
  • Strong organizational skills including but not limited to planning, prioritizing, time management and the ability to multi-task.
  • Demonstrated ability to use Microsoft Office suite of programs including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.  
     

Compensation & Other Information:

$76,322 - $99,598

Current hours of Work: Monday - Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
