Summary of Position:

As an energetic member of a performance-driven community service team your duties will include, but not be limited to, firefighting, vehicle extrication, rescues, pre-hospital emergency medical care, as well as fire prevention and public education activities. Successful candidates are also required to participate on one of the department’s special teams: Ice and Water Rescue, Hazardous Materials, and Technical Rescue (rope rescue, confined space, and trench rescue).

Work Performed:

  • Responds to emergency calls as a member of a platoon.
  • Performs firefighting duties including the combat extinguishment of fires, ventilation of buildings, etc.
  • Provides emergency medical aid as required, including first aid and CPR.
  • As directed, performs routine maintenance of equipment and property; reports unsafe conditions.
  • Participates in water recovery or rescue.
  • Operates related equipment as required, may be required to drive vehicles.
  • May participate in various public relations projects.
  • Assist with on the job training of firefighters.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

The following outlines the MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS required in order to apply for the Probationary Firefighter positions with the London Fire Department.

MINIMUM ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS:

  • Proof of grade 12 diploma in the Province of Ontario, GED or equivalent (transcript with grades or diploma accepted as proof).
  • Current IFSAC and/or ProBoard Certification in:
    • NFPA 1001, Firefighter Level 1
    • NFPA 1001, Firefighter Level II
    • NFPA 1072 (or 472), Hazmat Awareness
    • NFPA 1072 (or 472), Hazmat Operations
  • Other IFSAC and/or ProBoard certifications will be considered an asset.
  • Unregulated third‐party training provider certifications will not be accepted or used in the selection process.  Must be IFSAC/Proboard sealed only.

DRIVER’S LICENSE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Valid unrestricted Ontario class D driver's license with a Z endorsement provided prior to interview.
  • DZ Licence and/or road tests completed after the application deadline will not be accepted.
  • Out of province equivalent licences will be accepted at the time of application, however these must be converted to a valid Ontario DZ license within 90 days of hire.
  • Must provide proof of a 3-year uncertified driver’s abstract with application.

FIRST AID REQUIREMENTS:

  • Current First aid, CPR & AED certification is required.
  • "Emergency Care for Professional Responders" will be considered an asset (EMR)

CRIMINAL REFERENCE CHECK:

Criminal reference check with a vulnerable sector screen, no more than 12 months old at the time of the posting.
May be obtained from the police department in the city reflected on your driver’s licence.
Must be uploaded with your application prior to the posting closing date.
While waiting for your Criminal reference check to be processed, you may upload your payment receipt as proof of applying.

APTITUDE AND PHYSICAL TESTING:

Successful completion of Stages 1 and 2 of the OFAI Candidate Testing Services (as verified by possession of current and valid CTS Certificates). Certificates must be valid and current at the time of application to be accepted (not expired). 
Please note: A current and valid Stage 3 certification will be required prior to hire but not required at the time of application.
Applicants are responsible to cover the cost of the certifications noted above.
Candidate Physical Ability Tests (CPAT) are not accepted.
OFAI Swim test is an asset.

Compensation:

Starting rate - 60% of a First Class Firefighter (5th Class).
