Summary of Duties:

Reporting to the Supervisor, Information Security, the IT Hardware Technician provides support for server, network, and all associated devices required for the water treatment plants, datacenters and remote sites. Assists with information security related monitoring as well as systems necessary for the protection and improvement to information security and IT systems. Supports and provides advice for business systems that are critical to the business and operational environment. 

Work Performed:

  • Provide advice and related information to supervisor, managers and external vendors, as required, with respect to systems and hardware modifications/changes and adjustments required to implement and maintain effective systems.
  • Assist with plans, schedules and coordination of requests for business systems and/or equipment to ensure the effective and efficient selection, installation, implementation and ongoing use of the same.
  • Provide input in the development and administration of standards and guidelines with respect to feasibility studies, data security and integrity methods, systems analysis, systems design, programming, instructional programs, user developed applications, etc.
  • Undertake review, evaluation, and assessment of hardware and/or software products and recommend changes.
  • Provide guidance and instruction to divisional employees regarding the use of hardware and software technologies.
  • Liaise with third party application software vendors, Provincial or Federal agencies, internal and external personnel, auditors, and other computer sites regarding business solutions.
  • Maintain passwords and user rights to selected areas of Regional Water systems as assigned by management to ensure confidentiality of information. 
  • Install, maintain, and provide for software efficiencies through scripting proficiencies and streamlining.  Operate all backup and recovery applications for Regional Water's electronic data.
  • Complete installation, setup and maintenance of automated reporting systems to alert employees of potential problems to avoid system downtime.
  • Complete installation, setup and maintenance of servers, storage hardware, virtual environment and networking associated with Regional Water plants, pump stations, satellite facilities, server farm and hosting platforms.
  • Evaluate, recommend, setup, implement, move, diagnose and repair technology assets at all locations. Ensure all hardware, software and related technology is functioning properly. 
  • Work with and advise project team members on matters related to assignments. Participate in Regional Water and priority reviews involving vendors and contractors, project scheduling, and make recommendations regarding automation and long-term planning.
  • Maintain current knowledge of business technology, through continuous formal and self-learning programs and methods. Maintain current certifications required for the position as determined by the manager.
  • Install and maintain hardware and software technologies that enable 24x7x365 monitoring of data centre, plants and remote sites. On-call and stand-by rotation will be necessary.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Three-year Community College Computer Systems Technology Diploma or equivalent.

Experience:

Four years of related experience is required.  Experience in configuration and management of switching technologies is required.  Experience in setup and management of servers in a virtual environment is required.

Industrial and plant experience is an asset.  
 

Specialized Training & Licenses:

  • Valid Driver’s Licence – Class G
     

Skills and abilities in the following areas are necessary:

  • Effective troubleshooting skills.
  • Knowledge of Palo Alto firewalls and Dell servers/storage is necessary. 
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office 365, VISIO, SharePoint, Active Directory and other Microsoft products is necessary.
  • CCNA Routing and Switching and CCNA Wireless and/or other CCNA specializations, such as Cisco Certified Network Associate or Cisco Certified Network Professional are assets.
  • VMware and Palo Alto certification is an asset.
  • Effective troubleshooting skills.

Compensation & Other Information:

$56,455 - $81,677 (Level 13)

This posting is for one (1) permanent full-time position.

Current hours of Work: Monday - Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. 

Work Arrangement: Hybrid. Subject to change in accordance with business requirements.

These hours of work are subject to change in accordance with the Collective Agreement and may include evening hours and Saturdays.
